Samsung mid range smartphones will start coming with Infiniy Display. First Galaxy A8/A8+ 2018. Pics.Video.

We were thinking today a lot , when will mid-range Samsung smartphones sport the Infinity Display of the Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy Note8  and today we just recieved news from Asia about an upcoming Galaxy A8/A8+ 2018 with that feature. On the pictures below found on the user manual of the device the company is really confirming the Infinity Display:

Specifications:

The Galaxy A8 Plus (2018) bearing the model number “SM-A730” . Now, WinFuture.de has uncovered a manual for the Galaxy A8 (2018) with the model number “SM-A530” that gives a look at Samsung’s 2018 Galaxy A series, which features 18:9 displays.

The A8 (2018) is expected to have 4GB of RAM, while the larger A8 Plus (2018) willbe equipped with up to 6GB of RAM. The new devices are expected to be powered by the new Samsung Exynos 7885 SoC, which has a clock speed of 2.2GHz and will reportedly be fabricated on the company’s power-efficient 10nm process, and WinFuture.de reports that they’ll have a single 16MP camera on the back and a 16MP front camera.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) may have a 3000mAh battery, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet. According to the report, the A8 may have a 5.7 or 5.8-inch display and a 3000mAh battery, and both phones might launch with Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

The loudspeaker appears to be placed right above the power button on both handsets, opposite the volume rocker. In single-SIM models of the Galaxy A 2018 series, the SIM tray for the nano-SIM slot sits on the left, and the memory card slot’s housed in the upper edge of the device, where it’s accompanied by a dual nano SIM slot on dual-SIM models.

The Galaxy A8 and A8 Plus (2018) will reportedly have curved glass backs, giving them a look and feel similar to Samsung’s flagship devices. However, it should be noted that the top and bottom display bezels in the 2018 Galaxy A series will likely be bigger than the Galaxy S8 and Note 8.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) will have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but one thing it won’t have is a button that activate’s Samsung’s Bixby assistant.

The published user manual did indicate that Samsung will introduce the Infinity display with on-screen navigation keys to the 2018 A8 phones. An Always-On Display, as well as LED notification light, are both also making a return.

On the flip side, the user manual did confirm that the Galaxy A8/A8+ 2018 will feature a single rear camera with a LED flash by its side, while a fingerprint scanner sits below it.

The Galaxy 2018 Galaxy A series will come with dual front cameras. The presence of dual front cameras is an indication that the camera app will come with Live Focus feature for selfies.

Lastly, the manual did further reveal that A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) will boot Android 7.1.1 Nougat and support Samsung Pay over both NFC and MST.

Samsung acquires Fluenty a Korean startup company specialized in AI.

Yonhap News Agency reports that Samsung has acquired Fluenty, a South Korean startup that specializes in Artificial Intelligence (AI), to help it improve Bixby's speech recognition system.

According to the news agency, the agreement would be the first acquisition of a South Korean startup company by Samsung. The agreed price is not known.

Fluenty is a company founded in 2015 by former employees of LG Electronics, Naver and Kakao, together with the local accelerator FuturePlay. He has developed an AI-based chat platform that uses automatic learning technology to propose answers.

Samsung introduced Bixby in March and, according to the company itself, is already available in 200 countries and territories. Thanks to this voice-based assistant, Samsung has placed itself in a good position against Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Microsoft's Cortana.

A few days ago, the giant smartphone manufacturer revealed its plans to create research facilities in AI, and in October opened an AI development laboratory in Canada, in order to accelerate the development of this technology. In 2016, the company acquired Viv Labs, an AI platform development firm, for an amount that could be around 215 million dollars (about 182 million euros).

5G: KDDI and Samsung perform a demonstration on a moving train.

The Japanese operator KDDI and Samsung have achieved speeds of more than 1 Gb / s in a recent demonstration of 5G technology in a moving train.

Samsung has contributed to the test with precommercial 5G equipment, which includes a router, a radio access unit, and virtualized RAN and kernel. A peak speed of 1.7 Gb / s has been reached when the train was traveling at 100 km / h over a 1.5 km stretch of road.

The connection has also allowed uploads and downloads of data, which includes a download of an 8K video and an upload of a 4K video recorded by a camera that was in the train itself.

Both companies claim that the test has opened the door to several use cases, such as the Wi-Fi backhaul in the vehicle, the offer of better infotainment to passengers and greater security.

Yoshiaki Uchida, senior executive director of KDDI, affirms that the demonstration is "a milestone of great importance that announces that the marketing for the 5G is just near to begin".

Collaboration history.

Samsung and KDDI have cooperated in 5G mmWave demonstrations over the past few years. Thus, for example, they have carried out a multicellular data transfer using a device mounted on a car that circulated in the streets of Tokyo, and a high-speed test with a device incorporated in a car that traveled at almost 200 km / h. A race track in Yongin, South Korea.

KDDI says it will continue to collaborate with Samsung in the study of real-world use cases, as part of its effort to launch 5G services in 2020. In October, Fumio Watanabe, president of KDDI Research, indicated that the need to obtain Spectrum licensing, which in this case would be granted by the Japanese government, is the main obstacle faced by the operator to meet its objectives in 2020.

MWC 2018: Samsung to launch the Galaxy S9 with 90% screen to body ratio.

Samsung is  going to launch the Galaxy S9/S9+ with nearly a 90% screen to body ratio almost 6% more than the GalaxyS8/S8+ that have a 84 % screen to body ratio.

That means the front can be almost completely covered by panels on the Galaxy S9.

We just posted a few days ago about the Samsung patent related to this matter: Samsung is working on a Galaxy smartphone with 180˚ curved edge display

Now the Korea Herald is confirming just that.

The speculation about Samsung making a preview of the Galaxy S9 at CES 2018, the company said : It`s unlikely.

We will see then the Galaxy S9/S9+ ready for an special UNPACKED 2018 event just before the MWC 2018 that starts in February.

Samsung is working on a Galaxy smartphone with 180˚ curved edge display. Looks WOW.

Concept based on the illustrations below.

Samsung Galaxy smartphone with 180˚ curved edge display.

New Samsung patent shows Galaxy smartphone with fully curved display, up to the back of the device.

Today, a series of new Samsung patents have been published in the WIPO (World International Property Office) database. One of the patents concerns an application from May '17 for: an electronic device with a curved display on both sides of the device. So no rounded display, but really 180˚ curved, up to the back of the smartphone. There are a series of sketches attached to clarify the design.

On one sketch you can see the regular edge display, with a rounded screen (see illustration above). You also see a smartphone with a round edge. The display is bent 180˚ on each side and extended all the way to the rear of the unit.

Is this the new design for the Galaxy S9/S9+ and Note 9 ?

How many upcoming devices will Samsung show at CES 2018 alongside the in-out and out-in foldable  phones aka Galaxy X?

Samsung starts mass production of Exynos 9810 processor for the GalaxyS9/S9+ and Note 9.

On the press release below Samsung announced the start of the mass production of its 2nd gen 10nm FinFet process. Although Samsung did not mention the name of the processor, we all know the Koreans mean the Exynos 9810. This processor was silently announced earier this month. The Exynos 9 series SoC will be used in the new flagship devices, including the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. Later on, we also expect this chipset to power the Galaxy Note 9.

For its Galaxy S8 series and the Note 8, Samsung made use of the Exynos 8895 chipset. This was Samsung’s first 10nm processor. The newly developed Exynos 9810 is based on the 2nd generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology, 10LPP (Low Power Plus).

Press Release:

Samsung Starts Mass Production of its 2nd Generation 10nm FinFET Process Technology

New S3 line is now ready for ramp-up to meet the 10nm demand.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its Foundry Business has commenced mass production of System-on-Chip (SoC) products built on its second generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology, 10LPP (Low Power Plus).

10LPP process technology allows up to 10-percent higher performance or 15-percent lower power consumption compared to its first generation 10nm process technology, 10LPE (Low Power Early). As this process is derived from the already proven 10LPE technology, it offers competitive advantages by greatly reducing turn-around time from development to mass production and by providing significantly higher initial manufacturing yield.

SoCs designed with 10LPP process technology will be used in digital devices scheduled to launch early next year and are expected to become more widely available throughout the year.

“We will be able to better serve our customers through the migration from 10LPE to 10LPP with improved performance and higher initial yield,” said Ryan Lee, vice president of Foundry Marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung with its long-living 10nm process strategy will continue to work on the evolution of 10nm technology down to 8LPP to offer customers distinct competitive advantages for a wide range of applications.”

Samsung also announced that its newest manufacturing line, S3, located in Hwaseong, Korea, is ready to ramp up production of process technologies including 10nm and below. S3 is the third fab of Samsung’s Foundry Business, following S1 in Giheung, Korea and S2 in Austin, USA. Samsung’s 7nm FinFET process technology with EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) will also be mass produced at S3.

CES 2018: Continental introduces 5th gen of its short/long range radar sensors for vehicles w/automated driving.

Fifth Radar Generation Meets Future Requirements for Automated Driving.

- High precision in range resolution, object detection and accuracy in measuring the speed are key for future applications
- More than 30 million radar sensors from Continental will be in use worldwide by the end of 2017.

Technology company Continental has introduced the fifth generation of its short- and long-range radar sensors, which incorporate the company's extensive, long-standing expertise in vehicle surroundings sensors. This new generation will enter series production in 2019 and will feature greater capacity, catering to vehicle manufacturers' different requirements and electrical-electronic (E/E) architectures as it is also based on a scalable modular principle. Thanks to the worldwide trend of using 77 GHz technology, the sensor resolution increases and can detect smaller objects, such as an exhaust pipe that has fallen off, more accurately. With long-range radar, a range of up to 900 feet and an opening angle of ±60° are possible in the highest expansion stage depending on the required performance. With short-range radar, precise parking functions can be executed easily for the first time, in addition to functions such as blind spot detection, lane change assist or rear cross traffic alert.

"With the fifth generation of our powerful and tried-and-tested radar sensors, we are opening up new opportunities for modern advanced driver assistance systems," said Amit Kapoor, Head of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems at Continental North America. "Our latest radar generation is an important element in our technology portfolio to further strengthen and advance our leading position in the development of assisted and automated driving. In particular, the elevation measuring capability of our radar sensors allows the most varied of objects, even relatively small objects, to be detected more precisely."

Flexible usage and suitable for future E/E architectures

Continental's radar sensors are based on a highly sophisticated radar technology that benefits from four generations and almost 30 million units in series deployment to date. Measured against the scope of its performance, the development leap of the new generation lies in its compactness and flexible usage.

The image of the surroundings produced by the radar is sent to a central control unit such as the Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit. In this way, different E/E architectures of vehicles can be covered using a single sensor concept. In addition to today's standards for bus systems, such as High-Speed CAN and CAN-FD, the fifth generation is already prepared for Automotive Ethernet, thanks to the hardware concept, which ensures that the necessary bandwidth for transmitting sensor raw data to the Assisted & Automated Driving Control Unit is available.

Enhanced performance thanks to higher resolution and more precise detection

One of the features of the new generation is a higher resolution compared to previous radar generations, enabling a more exact snapshot of the current traffic situation. In addition, road boundaries like curbstones as well as the height of objects, such as the end of a traffic jam under a bridge are detected thanks to the sensors' evaluation measurement accuracy. Even the entry-level variant of the long-range radar has a range of 600 feet and an opening angle of ±45°. The expansion stage currently in preparation will look 900 feet ahead, with an opening angle of ±60°.

When four of the short-range radar sensors are installed on the corners of a vehicle, the wider opening angle and higher resolution facilitate a seamless 360° radar "safety belt" all the way around the vehicle. Such a detailed and seamless display of the entire area surrounding the vehicle is important, since the vehicle would not be able to take on the driver's tasks in automated driving otherwise. In conjunction with other sensors, such as a camera, surround view systems and 3D Flash LiDAR, the goal of achieving an understanding of the vehicle surrounding that is equal to or even better than that of a human being is coming closer.

An established strength of Continental's radar sensors is also found in the fifth generation. Called auto-alignment, the sensors use a software function to automatically correct deviations from the sensor's ideal location at its installation location on the vehicle.

In order to meet the rising demand worldwide, Continental is constantly expanding its production capacities. Production of long-range radar sensors was launched in Shanghai, China, in October of this year with the goal of producing several million units a year in order to meet the local high demand. The sensors are also produced in Germany, the U.S. and the Philippines.

Samsung reduces to 12 minutes mobile full battery charge with new invent.

Samsung Develops Battery Material with 5x Faster Charging Speed.

Recently, a team of researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) developed a “graphene* ball,” a unique battery material that enables a 45% increase in capacity, and five times faster charging speeds than standard lithium-ion batteries. The breakthrough provides promise for the next generation secondary battery market, particularly related to mobile devices and electric vehicles. In its research, SAIT collaborated closely with Samsung SDI as well as a team from Seoul National University’s School of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Exploring Next Generation Battery Technology.

Lithium-ion batteries were first commercialized in 1991, and widely applied to markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles. However, with standard lithium batteries requiring charging times of at least an hour to fully charge, even with quick charging technology, and considered to have reached their limit for capacity expansion, there have been numerous attempts to explore use of new innovative materials. Among the materials looked at, graphene has widely become the primary source of interest as the representative next generation material.

In theory, a battery based on the “graphene ball” material requires only 12 minutes to fully charge. Additionally, the battery can maintain a highly stable 60 degree Celsius temperature, with stable battery temperatures particularly key for electric vehicles.

In its research, SAIT sought for an approach to apply graphene, a material with high strength and conductivity to batteries, and discovered a mechanism to mass synthesize graphene into a 3D form like popcorn using affordable silica (SiO2). This “graphene ball” was utilized for both the anode protective layer and cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. This ensured an increase of charging capacity, decrease of charging time as well as stable temperatures.

Dr. Son In-hyuk, who led the project on behalf of SAIT, said, “Our research enables mass synthesis of multifunctional composite material graphene at an affordable price. At the same time, we were able to considerably enhance the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries in an environment where the markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Our commitment is to continuously explore and develop secondary battery technology in light of these trends.”

SAIT’s research results are covered in-depth in this month’s edition of the science journal Nature Communications in an article entitled, “Graphene balls for lithium rechargeable batteries with fast charging and high volumetric energy densities.” SAIT has also filed two applications for the “graphene ball” technology patent in the US and Korea.

*Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms from graphite, and is receiving much attention in the battery and display industry due to its physical, chemical stability. Graphene is 100 times more effective than copper in conducting electricity and displays remarkable electron mobility – 140 times faster than silicon – which makes it an ideal material for fast charge.
