Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently raised its notebook shipment forecast for the first quarter of 2011 by 10% to 9.4-9.6 million units, up from the original forecast of 8.5-9 million units, as the company is turning optimistic about the China market and the Lunar New Year holidays, according to sources from notebook makers.
As for the fourth quarter of 2010, due to demand in Europe and China not being as strong as expected, HP only ordered less than 10 million notebooks from upstream makers for the quarter. Although HP originally planned to order four million notebooks in November, as demand was weak due to Intel's upcoming new CPU platform, plus channel inventory was still rather high, the company ended up only ordering 3.3-3.4 million units, but the company was still one of the most aggressive first-tier brands in placing orders.
As for December, HP is unlikely to achieve its shipment forecast and may only see shipments of 3.5 million units, with total volumes to reach 37.5-37.7 million units for 2010, up 2% on year.
