MWC 2018: LG to unveil more advanced K8 and K10 smartphones. Specifications.

New Devices Close Gap Between LG’s
Price-Friendly Mass-Tier Devices and Flagships

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil the 2018 edition of its popular K8 and K10 mass-tier smartphones at MWC 2018, enhanced with even more premium features rivaling those of premium flagships. Both models will roll out globally in key regions such as Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

With a host of advanced camera features such as high speed auto focus and noise reduction for better low-light photography, the new K Series continues to deliver exceptional products to customers at exceptional prices. Both the K8 and K10 carry over the handsome glossy pebble identity that has been a key element of the K Series’ identity, complemented by its 2.5D Arc Glass design for a modern, seamless look that ages well with time. Both phones will be available in three new, striking colors for 2018: Aurora Black, Moroccan Blue, and Terra Gold.

The classy metallic design of the LG K10 with its metal U-frame not only looks sleek, but it is also packed with premium features not normally found in its price range. The K10 is equipped with the advanced 13MP rear camera technology found in the flagship LG G6 and a high resolution 8MP front camera that supports Bokeh when shooting selfies. With the K10, shutterbugs won’t miss any great photo opportunities with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) which is 23 percent faster than traditional auto focus. And the new Smart Rear Key not only unlocks the phone with a fingerprint, it also triggers Quick Shutter for faster photos and Quick Capture for easy screen shots.

The updated LG K8 delivers more advanced camera UX features for 2018 and low-light photography has been improved from the previous generation K8 with even brighter, clearer images. Favorite features such as Auto Shot, Gesture Shot, Flash for Selfie and Quick Share are carried over to the new K8 by popular demand.

Clearer photographs in dim environments is made possible in both the K8 and K10 with the new Low Light Noise Reduction feature. Combined with High Dynamic Range (HDR), photos come out sharper with more luminosity and contrast levels.

Taking group photos with friends or family is easier than ever thanks to the new Timer Helper feature. No longer is it necessary to guess how many seconds until the timer triggers the shutter. With Timer Helper, the K8 and K10 will help keep count using the flash as a visual aid so friends and family can be in the exact position at the right time.

Another new feature of the K Series camera is Flash Jump Shot, which snaps a photo every three seconds (up to 20 photos) and stitches the images together into a fun GIF for easy sharing. Flash Jump Shot is available on both the K8 and K10 and can be used with either the front or rear cameras.

“LG’s 2018 K Series range of smartphones is focused on delivering even more value to consumers looking for the right device that fits their lifestyle and needs,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice president and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re confident we can capture the hearts and minds of consumers in the fast-moving market with our smartphone camera technology and other convenient features.”

Visitors to MWC 2018 can experience the new K8 and K10 at LG’s booth in Hall 3 of Fira Gran Via from February 26 until March 1.

Bladeless Drone is a Red Dot Award Design Concept. Video.

Bladeless Drone

The Bladeless Drone solves the three main problems of today’s common drones: air humming, exposed blades and wind. Without exposed rotor blades, it takes advantage of the headwind and forces it through internal ducts to generate a downward flow.

Imagine one flying a common drone in the neighbourhood park, when suddenly, strong wind gusts over. The drone user tries to control the drone but the headwind destabilises it, taking it down, possibly injuring a child. Such accident can easily happen with today’s drones. Therefore, the Bladeless Drone uses technology that makes flying a drone safer. Without rotor blades, it uses adversities like headwind to its favour by regulating its airflow. This stabilises its motors for smoother flying, while converting the wind into a downward flow.

Unlike common drone’s designs, Bladeless Drone is designed to take maximum advantage of aerodynamics by using shapes we find in today’s airplanes and aircrafts. It is not only innovative in terms of functionality, but also beautiful to look at, be it in rest waiting for take-off, or flying high above.

The Bladeless Drone has four bladeless propellers: the main propeller positioned in the centre uses most of the ducted flow to support take-off and landing; and three other propellers define the direction. It also has four main air intake valves to extract moving air when flying. The Bladeless Drone takes the air and accelerates it through internal ducts and blades, forcing it through small vents generating downward flow and hence, lift.

The two front propellers can rotate 20 degrees forward and backwards. The back propeller rotates 20 degrees clockwise and counter clockwise. Each propeller is programmed to work based on the amount of headwind received. At ground level, the propellers work at their maximum, sucking air from the four intake valves and accelerating it to take-off. During flight, depending on the strength of the headwind, the propellers regulate themselves to save energy and work with the induced wind.

Western Europe 4Q 2017 Finals: WorldWide Detacahable Tablets market share: Apple 24.1%, Samsung 19.8%, Amazon 9.1%, says IDC.

According to the latest figures published by International Data Corporation (IDC), the overall tablet market for Western Europe declined 13.1% YoY, shipping 10.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017 (2017Q4), indicating a continued weakening of the market. Slate tablets continue to be the primary driver of this market erosion, declining by 15.4% YoY, as their productive use cases pale in comparison to newer form factors, and they increasingly become relegated to simple media consumption devices. Detachable tablets have slowed down but continue to see traction in certain areas. They posted a minor 2.0% YoY decline, but thanks to increasing interest in premium devices, coupled with a very strong commercial performance of 8.5% YoY growth, the value of their sales (in euros) rose by 3.2%.

Overall, the commercial segment performed slightly negatively with a 1.4% decline YoY. Despite this, detachable tablets experienced growth of 8.5%, driven by increased adoption into enterprise, where they are poised to address the increasing portable needs of the mobile workforce.

On the consumer side, seasonal promotions were sufficient to grow the market QoQ but the market continued to weaken YoY, with a decline of 15.5%. Slate tablets' value proposition for consumers continues to diminish. Certain vendors pushed a considerable volume of this form factor as a gateway into their larger ecosystems, but this did not make up for the growing consumer disinterest, leading to a 16.8% decline YoY. Detachable tablets also contracted in this segment, declining 7.1% YoY, as the rapid adoption of convertibles cannibalizes their sales.

"Profitability is increasingly becoming the focus among the most important tablet manufacturers," said Daniel Goncalves, senior research analyst at IDC Western Europe. "The performance of Apple and Samsung, the two main players in the Western European market, together representing over 40% of all tablet shipments, reflects the increasing concern for value over volume. Both posted double-digit growth in revenue YoY, despite the single-digit declines YoY in units."

Goncalves said Apple's results were driven by the good traction of the newer iPad Pro detachables, particularly among professionals and prosumers, through notebook replacement. Additionally, this device is appealing to tablet users upgrading to a premium device with keyboard capabilities and enhanced specs. "This is a trend we observe across the whole device spectrum, where consumers are increasingly willing to invest more to obtain better user experiences, and to be able to enhance their device's longevity," said Goncalves.

Company Analysis

Apple ranked first with 24.1% market share, but decreasing 1.0% YoY. Its solid lead was upheld by good traction of the newer iPad detachables in the commercial and prosumer space.

Samsung ranked second, recording a market share of 19.8%, but decreasing 5.2% YoY. Despite the decline in units, a solid performance from its premium android range enabled Samsung to grow in value by 8.2% YoY.

Amazon ranked third with a market share of 9.1%, despite a large YoY decline of 19.2%. Steep discounts around the holiday period, and the inclusion of the Alexa voice assistant, led to very strong sales this quarter.

Lenovo ranked fourth after growing 0.2% YoY in market share to 7.6%. This was driven by a robust commercial performance for its detachable range.

Huawei was the only top 5 vendor that grew YoY (27.7%), maintaining its fifth-place spot with 5.6% market share. This growth has been leveraged from an increased presence in distribution.

Note: Tablets are portable, battery-powered computing devices inclusive of both slate and detachable form factors. Tablets may use LCD or OLED displays (epaper-based ereaders are not included here). Tablets are both slate and detachable keyboard form factor devices with color displays equal to or larger than 7.0in. and smaller than 16.0in.

Samsung launches "OVER THE HORIZON" 2018 ringtone for the Galaxy S9/S9+. Video.

Each generation of Samsung’s Galaxy devices comes preloaded with a fresh new rendition of “Over the Horizon”, Samsung’s signature, six-note sound. This year, Samsung teamed up with Icelandic composer Pétur Jónsson to craft a minimalist arrangement that takes listeners on an atmospheric journey of discovery.

Samsung classic ringtone OVER THE HORIZON 2018 version for the Galaxy S series smartphones since 2011, has been launched and will be included on the new GalaxyS9/S9+ smartphones coming this February 25 at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.

Press Release:
Pétur Jónsson’s ‘Over the Horizon’ Takes New Galaxy Smartphone Users on a Soundscape Journey.

As smart phones become an increasingly essential tool of everyday life, the ringtone, too, has made a presence in today’s modern world. “Over the Horizon” is perhaps one of the most recognizable ringtones, as it has been the default ringtone of Galaxy devices since 2011. It is so recognizable, in fact, that when heard from a distance, you might even wonder if it’s coming from your own device.

Each year, with each new generation of Galaxy devices, “Over the Horizon” is rearranged to mirror the aesthetic transformation of the devices themselves. For 2018, Samsung reached out to Icelandic composer Pétur Jónsson to reimagine the melody.

Delicately layering instruments, Jónsson’s minimalist arrangement takes you away on an atmospheric journey of discovery. The piece begins with the soft tones of a single piano playing the refrain. As additional instruments are gradually introduced, the sound rises to a crescendo before melting away. As the video cuts away from the opening scene of Jónsson at the piano, it prompts you to imagine travelling over the remote Icelandic countryside. Capturing the beauty of Nordic nature, the camera pans over misty mountains and jagged cliffs, steaming geysers and snow-blanketed hills.

Listening to this year’s piece by Jónsson, you will find that the notes arouse the most pure, fundamental elements of the human sentiment that often remain hidden in our daily lives. In this way, the latest version of Samsung’s brand sound has the power to relax the mind and heal the soul, thus resonating with all who hear it, regardless of their age.

Get a first listen of Jónsson’s version of “Over the Horizon” in the video above.

LG G7 6.1 inch Snapdragon 845 smartphone coming in June. Specifications.

LG will not announce a new smartphone at MWC 2018 this time. Instead the company is taking a deep device development to make a better job with the new flagship mobile and it is rumored that will arrive with a 6.1 inch display 18:9 aspect ratio and with  a new technology called MLCD+ which thanks to the RGBW matrix will be able to deliver an 800-nit level of brightness. The panel will also be very economical, representing a 35% energy save from the standard LCD IPS screens.

The LG G7 will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor that gets its graphical power from the newest Adreno 630 GPU. The multitasking power will be ensured by the amount of 4GB of RAM, but there is no word if a 6GB variant will also be available. The smartphone will support up to 64GB onboard storage, but thanks to the microSD support it can be further expanded.

Camera wise the smartphone will sport a dual sensor on the rear, which consists of two 13MP units with f/1.6 lens aperture. Selfie enthusiasts will get covered by the addition of an 8MP sensor on the front.

IP 68 water and dust protection.

The smartphone is also rumored to come with a military approved case, similar to the one found in LG V30, and Stereo Speakers.

We are just guessing about the name of the smartphone as LG G7 which could be the succesor of the last year LG G6.
